Uncovering the story behind S&T Program for Responsible Mining in Mindanao
Not so long after the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) funded the S&T Program for Responsible Mining in Mindanao, the program continues to obtain information from various activities that geared towards sustainable development. The program aims to achieve socially acceptable, economically viable, environment friendly and ecologically sound mining in Mindanao.
The Responsible Mining Program is the biggest ever engagement of the Philippine Government supporting mining research in the country. Behind all these endeavours, lie the brains behind how the program was started. How did the SUCs implementing this program managed to move forward despite the divided minds of society towards mining activities?
This was the main purpose of the recently conducted writeshop organized by the Department of Science and Technology–telling stories behind every research project.
Researchers from all over the Philippines with DOST funding gathered at the Executive Lounge of DOST on February 6, 2015 to take part in putting together the special compendium of DOST-funded research programs and projects that will contain narratives from 2010 to present. The write-ups will highlight the country’s growing scientific and technological capabilities and provide a means of showcasing how S&T provide solutions to various issues in the country. The compendium will be submitted to National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) together with the National R&D Agenda.
To date, the Responsible Mining Program still stands by its goal which is to share the information and technologies generated from the R&D efforts in coming up with potential solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of mining as well as develop protocols for responsible mining in Caraga Region, Northern Mindanao and SOCKSARGEN.
